Holidays aren’t far off!

Posted by Shamn on 10/07/2009

turkey Well, now that we are only 49 days before Thanksgiving Day and 79 days before Christmas, it’s about time to carefully think on how I spend my money on giving gifts. In order to avoid the last minute shopping, I have to shop early.  I love to have a holiday that is more relaxing and just enjoy it. Since I’m not really big into Halloween, I have to jump to Thanksgiving, then Christmas! Since I’m 7000miles away from my family and friends, I always make sure I have a lot of credits for my VOIP to give them a call on holiday and bulk of Thanksgiving cards!
Thanksgiving is a day that we should be giving thanks and spending time with the ones we love but sometimes we live apart so it’s hard to gather them in one place, so sending thanksgiving card is a nice touch. I know it’s not essential but that’s one way of showing that you think of them.
Not only to your family, I also send cards to my personal doctor, local fire and police department.  Now is the time to make a list about your plan on holidays.

christmastreeThen, here’s Christmas, always been my favorite holiday!  In where I grew up, 2 months before December, they start playing Christmas music, well, not in where I’m at. Hopefully, next year I will be celebrating Christmas with my family back in Philippines. I terribly missed all those misa de gallo, noche Buena and just staying up late at night on Christmas Eve with lots of food, fireworks, just being with families, and listening to loud music, is way much fun. Recently, I went shopping and you can see Christmas decorations are up already. I was like, scared, thinking we’re almost in 2010.  It’s going to be another year!
I usually start decorating my house right after Thanksgiving Day. This year, I’m thinking of getting a real tree and putting up my pre-lit artificial tree in the other side of the room. Haven’t had real tree since I was born!!!
Nowadays, Christmas has become too commercialized but I still love and enjoy wrapping my presents! I don’t care if I receive or not, as the saying goes “it’s better to give than to receive” For me, it’s the best time of year; I can put up colorful lights around the house, listening to Christmas music, putting up decorations, family and church.
But planning before the holiday can make you less stressful. It’s not too early to start doing your to-do-list for a holiday! It’s easier for me because most of my families are far away, I don’t have to wrap lots of gifts and send packages, instead I have to set how much I am willing to spend and just send cash especially for my nieces and nephews back at home. It’s more easy and practical way of doing it! Save shipping too!!! You know sending big box packages can be very expensive!
I enjoy choosing and giving gifts but I hate all that rush, hurry and worry!!!   I think the key to avoid the stress on Christmas shopping is really plan ahead. Make some list of everyone you want to give a present to and think how much you are willing to spend and stick to that. If you can pay it in cash, much better, do not bring your CC if that’s possible! You don’t want any surprises in your statement of account after the holiday, right?
In this tough economy, it will be hard on a lot of people but it doesn’t have to be because you can start preparing now.

Young and broke – not so cute

Posted by Shamn on 08/30/2009

I know neither of us really had any money while we were in school, parents send us to school, or some works part time while studying.
But now that we have a job and lot’s of planning to do.

These days, it seems that people are getting into debt at a younger age. The problem with many is that, when they get credit card or money in their pocket, they go a bit out of control?

Now, it gets to the point that I just don’t want to turn on the news because it’s makes you sad. Seems like week after week, people are losing their homes, bankruptcies are rising, and sometimes you just can’t keep up. People who worked hard for many years are forced to withdraw their retirement funds just to make ends meet. It’s heartbreaking!

I guess it’s a real eye-opener to us. We live in a modern age and for some people money is freedom so we love to buy stuff that’s cool and trendy. But did you ever stay within your means?

Yes, we don’t talk about money until we get married and that’s very common. It never crossed my mind until I got a job either and starts thinking.
Everyone has a unique attitude to money. Some people love it thinking what they can buy and others see it as source of security.

The point is, we can’t predict the future. We don’t know for sure what the next day holds, and preparing yourself for unexpected is one of the best ways to prevent it, and you also feel better about yourself when you have savings at your own name while single.
